The EicCircularBioplastics Portfolio was officially launched in October 2025. The portfolio has 6 participant projects, all funded under the EIC Pathfinder Challenge Nature-inspired alternatives for food packaging and films for agriculture - Call Horizon-EIC-2024-PATHFINDERCHALLENGES-01-03.
The Pathfinder Challenge 01-03 supports ambitious research to develop sustainable, nature-inspired materials for food packaging and agriculture that match plastic functionality while reducing environmental footprints.
The projects funded under this Challenge aim to span the full lifecycle of materials and products, using abundant bio-based polymers, ensuring safety, circularity, reusability and full biodegradability; and meeting strict regulatory and sanitary standards. All projects will pursue improved lifecycle assessments and are expected to deliver products with enhanced performance, reaching at least TRL 4 and collectively supporting a shift towards a circular, climate-neutral, pollution-free food and agriculture sector.
Representatives of the six participant projects (CELLAGRI, BIO4PACK, BORN, SATISPHACTION, ECOSYSTEM and BIO2PES) had the opportunity to meet each other and trigger the Portfolio activity during the Kick-Off meeting held in Brussels in October 2025. The event was chaired by the EIC Programme Manager from Food Chain Technologies, Prof. Ivan Stefanic. At the in-person meeting, attendees introduced their corresponding projects, including objectives, challenges and technical approaches. Also, four working groups were proposed to distribute and manage the different synergies and approaches of every project.
